Our leather
1. The grain:
The grain describes the grade of the physical skin itself. We use Full-grain leather and Top-grain leather only, processed from cow and sheep hide. “Full-grain” and “Top-grain” are, in layman terms, the best.
Full-grain leather:
“Full” refers to the untouched state of the animal hide. Flawless animal skin is used to process this full-grain leather, and hence “correction” is not needed (see top-grain leather). Sometimes, certain flaws such as scars and mosquito bites sustained by the cow are accepted which yield beautiful natural “designs” on the leather.
Top-grain leather:
Also known as “corrected-grain”. The surface of flawed animal skin is polished or “corrected” to give a beautiful smooth, shiny and even-looking surface.
Note: “Top” does not mean “top-grade”. It means that the top or upper surface of the hide is used, except that it is not complete or full because the outermost surface is polished off.
2. The treatment/process:
We use oil-tanned, chrome-tanned and oil-tanned nubuck leather.
Oil-tanned and chrome-tanned:
The two most used preservation process. Click on “Fun Facts” for more information on the tanning process.
Nubuck:
Surface is furry. Nubuck is the uppermost surface of the hide that is brushed to give its furry feel. Consider suede, where the underside of the hide is removed and then brushed to give its furry feel. Comparing nubuck with suede, nubuck is more valuable.
3. For simplicity’s sake:
Think leather shoes that season with regular use and maintenance, becoming shinier and more beautiful.
