Why buy full-grain leather belts

Other reasons aside, belts made of full-grain leather are the best because they are most durable.

Departmental stores mostly sell belts that are made of “coated split”, which is also genuine leather. However, a “split” is but genuine leather with its most valuable epidermis removed. This causes a cosmetic problem because the surface is rough (see picture), unlike the epidermis which is smooth. Therefore the solution to making a cosmetically undesirable split saleable is to coat the surface with a layer of paint or polymer, hence the name “coated split”.

Problems with coated split belts:

1. there is an intrinsic weakness, ie there is a fracture, between the layers of coat and the split. Any force or pressure applied along the belt results in the separation between the two layers, ie the coat peels off the split. This occurs most frequently in the areas surrounding the buckle because of the bending and twisting in order to fasten the belt.
2. the polymer and the split dries independently of each other. While the split continuously absorbs moisture and oil from the wearer of the belt, the nonabsorbent polymer eventually dries which results in cracks or peeling as in point 1.

Why buy full-grain leather belts:

1. No points of fracture along the entire length of belt, unlike the fracture between the layers of polymer and the split.
2. Continued use of the full-grain leather belt moisturizes the entire length of the strap including the epidermis, preventing it from drying and hence does not crack.
3. Full-grain leather seasons with use to become more beautiful.
